The invention of basketball was not an accident. It was developed to meet a need. Those boys simply would not play 'Drop the Handkerchief.'

Necessity is the Mother of Invention

James Naismith was born in Canada. He moved to United States for the job as the physical education teacher at the YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts in USA at the age of 30. His boss felt that it was necessary to keep the youth excercised and occupied during the harsh winter thus tasked him to come up with a suitable indoor game. As a result Naismith combined the best of rugby, lacrosse, soccer, baseball and football and invented the new game 'Basket Ball' in 1891.
