Sometimes the best intentions backfire. 

We have learnt to take duplicate keys while traveling and divide the money between us. Passports always are xeroxed and kept separate. 

Though now with smart phones it is easier to take a photo of all documents and send them to someone not traveling. 

but at that time it must have been a calamity. losing carbon copies too. 

Still it is not really a "stupid" stupid thing.
